Contestants get ready for 2012 Miss Indian World pageant

Twenty-eight young women will be competing in the Miss Indian World pageant at the Gathering of Nations this weekend in New Mexico.

Three students from the Institute of American Indian Arts, a tribal college in Santa Fe, are vying for the title. One is Joanne Morales-Gonzales, 25, who hopes to use the platform to raise awareness about the Taino indigenous people in Puerto Rico.

"I don't even know how to explain what it feels when someone says you don't exist," Morales-Gonzales told The Santa Fe New Mexican.

The winner will be crowned Saturday night at the powwow.
