Ute Tribe threatens lawsuit for pollution from power plant

The Ute Tribe of Utah is threatening a lawsuit over pollution from a coal-fired power plant on the reservation.

Chairwoman Irene Cuch said the Bonanza Power Plant threatens the "health, safety, and welfare" of people on the reservation. Although Deseret Power says it's one of the cleanest facilities of its type in the nation, a study attributed deaths and other health problems to air pollution from the plant.

"We do not and will not tolerate illegal air pollution on our reservation," Cuch said in a press release, The Salt Lake Tribune reported. "If Deseret won’t clean up its act, we will go to court to force them to clean up."
