Cherokee woman who walked Trail of Tears as a girl honored

A Cherokee Nation woman who was three years old when she was forced to walk the Trail of Tears was honored on Saturday.

Electa Crittenden was forced to leave Tennessee in 1838. Her family moved to what is now Adair County in northeastern Oklahoma, where she died in 1879.

Crittenden's grave was nearly forgotten until it was uncovered several years ago. “This is holy ground,” Billie Napolitano, a tribal member, told The Oklahoman.
