Rep. Cole supports Native Hawaiian recognition in campaign trip

Rep. Tom Cole (R-Oklahoma), the only American Indian in Congress, said Native Hawaiians deserve to be treated the same as federally recognized tribes.

Cole was in Hawaii to campaign for fellow Republican Linda Lingle, who is running for Senate. When she was governor, she supported bills to extend the policy of self-determination to Native Hawaiians.

Cole, a member of the Chickasaw Nation, said Lingle will be an effective advocate for Native Hawaiians if elected.
