RAPID CITY, SOUTH DAKOTA –– A member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe is seeking the city council’s Ward 4 seat, which represents the most concentrated Native American population in Rapid City. Theresa Spry, a longtime North Rapid resident, comes to the race with experience in community activism, including the Sioux San Hospital Task Force, Defenders of the Black Hills, Indigenous Women’s Political Caucus and People against Racism, Positive Improvement Committee. In the past, Spry has served as chair of both the League of Democratic Women of Western South Dakota and Precinct 4-2 for the Pennington County Democratic Party. The June 5 primary pits Spry against Josh Snyder and Amanda Scott for the Ward 4 seat. Incumbent Jordan Mason has chosen not to seek re-election.
