Blog: USDA officials promote Winnebago Tribe's housing efforts

"Two top U.S. Department of Agriculture officials visited a Winnebago, Neb. family Tuesday which transitioned from renters to home-owners with the help of a bevy of federal, state and tribal housing assistance programs.

Dr. Joe Leonard, USDA assistant secretary for civil rights, and Janie Hipp, senior advisor on tribal affairs to Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, came to Winnebago to celebrate National Homeownership Month. Leonard and Hipp were joined at the event by Maxine Moul and Elsie Meeks, the USDA Rural Development directors for Nebraska and South Dakota, respectively.

The delegation highlighted one of the many Winnebago Tribal family who have realized the dream of home ownership in recent years. Marcel Picotte Sr. and his family of five today live in a three bedroom, 1,568-square-foot, ranch-style home."
