Kevin Washburn confirmed to BIA job but not yet at work in DC

Kevin Washburn has been confirmed as the new leader of the Bureau of Indian Affairs but he's not yet at work in Washington, D.C., a spokesperson for the agency said this morning.

Washburn is a member of the Chickasaw Nation. He's the second Chickasaw citizen to serve as Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs -- the first was Neal McCaleb, who served during the Bush administration.

Including Washburn, four of the last six assistant secretaries have been members of a tribe in Oklahoma. A fifth has a parent who is a member of an Oklahoma tribe.

Washburn will start work at the BIA after he is sworn in. A public ceremony, if any, hasn't been announced.
