"One of the most interesting aspects of my work is my involvement with American Indians. Back in the 1980s, an attorney friend of mine asked if I would talk to some of his tribal clients pro-bono about how to handle royalties from a mining project. That work lead to speaking engagements and eventually investing and financial advisory work.
Native American culture is pretty tight-knit and it’s hard for outsiders, including financial advisers, to gain acceptance. That’s understandable, considering that over the past 200 years the U.S. has given Native Americans the worst we have to offer at every level. So earning their trust can take a while and usually requires knowing someone who is already on the inside."
