Fond du Lac Band plans to distribute trust fund to its members

The Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa said it will distribute its share of a trust fund settlement to tribal members.

H.R.1272, the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe Judgment Fund Distribution Act, authorizes the distribution of a $28 million trust fund. About $12 million will be distributed on a per capita basis to the 40,000-plus members of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe and the remaining $16 million will be equally distributed to the six Chippewa bands.

The Fond du Lac Band has decided to distribute its share so that means its members will share in an additional $2.7 million should H.R.1272 become law. The bill passed the House by a voice vote on Monday.

S.1739, the companion version in the Senate, has yet to make it out of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee.
