BIA reportedly sets deadline over Spirit Lake Nation contracts

The Bureau of Indian Affairs has reportedly set a September 10 deadline to take over self-determination contracts for the Spirit Lake Dakotah Nation in North Dakota.

Sen. John Hoeven (R-North Dakota) told The Grand Forks Herald that he spoke with BIA Director Mike Black about the issue on Monday. He said the agency will go back to the reservation on September 10 to determine whether progress has been made to protect children from abusive situations.

“This has got to get fixed and you’ve got to have some hard timelines for getting it fixed,” Hoeven told the paper.

The BIA sent a "strike team" to the reservation to address child safety concerns that have drawn national attention.
