Eastern Cherokees impose fines for domestic violence offenses

Members of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians who are convicted of domestic violence offenses will now be subject to a $1,000 fine.

The fine is aimed at repeat offenders. “We are hoping this will make them stop and think," Iva Key, the tribe's domestic violence program manager, told The Smoky Mountain News.

The tribal court system issues about 120 domestic violence restraining orders a year, the paper said.
