Chumash Tribe to hold public meeting to discuss plans for land

The Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians in California will hold a public meeting on January 21 to discuss its land plans.

The tribe acquired 1,400 acres near the reservation for $40 million. The land will be used for housing and other development but some local officials and residents have raised concerns when it appeared the tribe might ask Congress to place the property in trust.

“Since we purchased the land in 2010, many questions have surfaced,” Chairman Vincent Armenta said in a written statement, The Solvang Valley News reported. “After reviewing several possible plans for tribal housing development with our tribal members, we are now ready to share information on those plans with the public.”

Litigation has held up some of the tribe's prior land-into-trust applications.
