Fond du Lac Band plans to demolish building deemed unsafe

The Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians in Minnesota wants to tear down an 83-year-old building that the Bureau of Indian Affairs says is unsafe.

The tribe bought the historic Carter Hotel in downtown Duluth for $318,000.. The building suffers from mold, water damage and other problems, according to the BIA.

“The Carter Hotel is now a significant health and safety problem,” Midwest regional director Diane Rosen said in a letter to Duluth Mayor Don Ness, The Duluth News Tribune reported.

The building is on the National Register of Historic Places so that could make it more difficult for the tribe to demolish it. The tribe has submitted a land-into-trust application for the site.
