All 229 federally recognized tribes in Alaska now have a voice with the Alaska Federation of Natives.

Most tribes are already members of AFN. But now they will get to help choose representatives on AFN's 37-member board.

“The AFN has evolved into a strong voice for Alaska Native public policy, but because the organic document had not changed for some time, we were missing out on a truly key component of people in Alaska," Gregory Razo, the chair of AFN's executive governance committee, told The Alaska Dispatch.

Each of AFN's 12 regions has three members -- a corporation representative, a non-profit representative and a village representative. Tribes will get to choose the village representative.
