Radio DJ apologizes for stirring controversy about Lumbee Tribe

A popular radio disc jockey in North Carolina apologized for stirring controversy about the Lumbee Tribe.

DJ Jane Dough aired a call on Foxy 99 that questioned the legitimacy of the tribe. The question was subsequently posted to Dough's Facebook page and to the station's Facebook page, drawing significant attention and complaints from tribal members and their supporters.

”We proudly note and salute the very rich history of the Lumbee Tribe and the many contributions Lumbees have made in our area and throughout the nation,” market manager Mac Edwards told The Fayetteville Observer. “The Lumbees are and have been an authentic Native-American people.”

Congress recognized the Lumbees as "Indians" during the height of the termination era in the 1950s. But the law denied them the benefits associated with federal recognition.
