Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes set to manage dam

The Confederated Salish Kootenai Tribes of Montana are moving closer to a deal to own and operate the Kerr Dam.

The tribe has been negotiating for decades. The only hurdle left appears to be the purchase price.

“The Salish and Kootenai tribes are really at the forefront for asserting their authority over natural resources on their lands,” said Joe Hovenkotter, the general counsel for Energy Keepers, the tribe's energy company, The Missoulian reported.

The tribe is offering $16 million for the dam. PPL Montana, the current owner, wants $51.5 million.
