Treasurer of Mashantucket Tribe barred from federal contracts

Steven Thomas, the treasurer of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut, has been barred from doing business with the federal government for a year, the Associated Press reported.

Thomas can't enter into contracts with federal agencies or handle money from federal grants, the AP reported. It comes after he was indicted on charges of stealing money from the tribe when he worked in the natural resources department.

Thomas has pleaded not guilty and has not been removed from his post. His brother, Michael Thomas, the former chairman of the tribe, also has been charged with theft.
