Poll finds local support for use of Washington Redskins name





A majority of residents in the Washington, D.C., area believe the Washington Redskins should not change its name, according to a poll from The Washington Post.

Of respondents, 66 percent say the team should keep its name. Among respondents who are fans of the team, support grew to 79 percent.

Yet the poll supported a key argument of Indian activists who want to eliminate the name. Of respondents who believe the team should keep the name, 56 percent said the term "Redskin" is an inappropriate way to refer to Native Americans.

Among respondents who are fans, 53 percent agreed the term is inappropriate.
