Spirit Lake Nation chooses Russ McDonald as new chairman

Voters of the Spirit Lake Nation of North Dakota elected Leander "Russ" McDonald as chairman on Monday after removing Roger Yankton from the post.

Tribal members gathered for a general council meeting to vote on a petition against Yankton. He vowed to fight for his job despite being ousted by a wide margin.

McDonald served as chairman before losing an election to Yankton in 2011. He defeated two candidates for the post yesterday.
