Michael “Mic” Isham Jr. was elected chairman of the Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Ojibwe Indians of Wisconsin on July 2.

Isham was one of eight candidates for tribal council. He won the most votes and was quickly nominated as chairman.

“The United States Government spent millions of dollars and a lot of time and effort to try and wipe out our ways, our religion, our hunting and gathering lifestyle — but after all that we are still here!" Isham said after his election, The Sawyer County Record reported.

Isham will serve a two-year term. He succeeds Gordon Thayer.
