Letter: No justification for endured use of ugly 'Redskins' name

Writer discusses hateful origins of the Washington "Redskins" name:
There is no win-win scenario that would allow the name "Redskins" to endure. Whatever people might think it means, it was a word born of disrespect, hate, and murder. The longer this debate continues the more damage is done to the franchise these fans love. The more resistance to this change that is offered, the more polarized people will become.

Whether it changes now or in 20 years it will eventually happen because the name is offensive. Every dictionary available lists it as a racial pejorative, if it is listed at all. The organization and the fans should get out in front of this instead of falling behind. They should set themselves to the task of conjuring up a new name that allows them to embrace the glories of their team's past without clinging needlessly to this ugly term.

Not doing so says more about the team and its fan base than any logo or brand name ever will.
