Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe breaks ground on housing project

The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts broke ground on its first housing project since gaining federal recognition.

The tribe plans to build 50 to 55 housing units, with 16 duplexes reserved for tribal elders. The street leading to the road will be named in honor of Alice Lopez, the tribe's late former housing department director.

"The women in our tribe are our strength," Chairman Cedric Cromwell said at the groundbreaking, The Cape Cod Times reported.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development has provided $600,494 for the tribe's housing program.
