USET set for annual meeting on Eastern Cherokee Reservation

The United South and Eastern Tribes host their annual meeting and expo next week.

The meeting takes place from October 28-October 31 on the reservation of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in North Carolina.

The first topic on the agenda on Monday morning is the Change the Mascot campaign, which is being overseen by the Oneida Nation of New York, a USET member.

Assistant Secretary Kevin Washburn, the head of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, is set to give an update on land-into-trust and other issues on Tuesday. The expo opens in the afternoon.

“Our USET seal should serve as a constant reminder to us all about unity and strength of our 26 member tribes," said President Brian Patterson. "From our initial origins under the great council oak tree to the present day, we have been honored and blessed by the support nourishment of our membership and our many strong and proud leaders who have been our voice over the years."
