Spirit Lake Nation installs new chief judge for tribal court system

The Spirit Lake Nation of North Dakota has a new chief judge for its tribal court system.

Joseph Morsette, 46, is a member of the Chippewa Cree Tribe of Montana and his grandfather was enrolled at Spirit Lake. He most recently served as director of the Native Americans Into Law program at the University of North Dakota.

“One thing we wanted to be was in the community,” Morsette told The Grand Forks Herald, referring to his family's move to the reservation. “I think that’s important and I told them that, that I want to be there as your chief judge.”
