Eastern Cherokees working to revive deer on reservation

The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians is working with the state of North Carolina to restore the white-tailed deer to the reservation.

The deer plays a prominent role in Cherokee culture but only a small population remains on the reservation. The tribe will be putting the animals in a special habitat in hopes of restoring their numbers.

"These efforts will have lasting effects on our tribal community and on the region," Chief Michell Hicks told the Associated Press.
