Passamaquoddy Tribe makes progress on state fishing talks

The Passamaquoddy Tribe and the state of Maine are near a final agreement on elver fishing.

The Passamaquoddy Tribe at Pleasant Point and the Passamaquoddy Tribe at Indian Township and the state have been at odds over the fish. The tribes have been issuing licenses to their members but the state has cited tribal fishermen and seized their equipment.

The tribe will apparently agree to a catch limit and will stop issuing licenses for fyke nets. Tribal fishermen will also be required to use a state-issued swipe card when they sell their catch.
