Designer Tom Ford has updated the Navajo velvet dress for the runway.

Ford, who grew up in New Mexico, was inspired by the fashions worn by women of the Navajo Nation. He opened his fall/winter 2014 show with a modern version of a velvet black dress.

“The first dress was actually the same dress that Navajo Indian women have been wearing since the 1920s and still wear,” Ford told the Associated Press.

Ford maintains a home in New Mexico and served as a judge for the fashion show at the Santa Fe Indian Market in 2011.
