Mapuche activist convicted of arson and murder for fatal attack

An activist from the Mapuche Tribe in Chile was convicted of arson and murder in an attack linked to an ongoing land rights struggle.

Celestino Cordova Transito, 27, and other activists were allegedly distributing pamphlets about the death of a Mapuche man when he was apparently shot in the neck by an elderly rancher. The rancher's home was torched, causing his death and that of his wife.

Transito was also accused of violating an anti-terror law but the court said the crime did not rise to an act of terrorism.
