Hopi Tribe weighs economic development plans for highway land

The Hopi Tribe of Arizona is considering economic development options for land it owns near a major interstate.

The tribe owns 200 acres of trust land in Winslow, along Interstate 40. There are also tribal properties at several locations near the heavily-trafficked highway.

The Hopi Tribe Economic Development Corporation has completed two phases of an economic development study. Options will be presented to the tribal council in the next couple of months.

"To get to shovel the dirt, I think there are still some hurdles we have to overcome and we're working on those right now," Kevin Lombardo, the CEO of the corporation, told The Navajo-Hopi Observer.

Most of the land is about 70 miles from the main Hopi villages.
