Tex Hall, the chairman of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation of North Dakota, is seeking another term in office.

Hall served two terms as chairman before being defeated for a third term in 2006. He returned to the tribe's highest position in 2010 and has presided over a wave of economic expansion on the reservation, fueled by energy development.

In the last year alone, the tribe has collected nearly $200 million in oil tax revenues. Oil production on the reservation accounts for 30 percent of the production in the entire state.

The growth hasn't come without heartaches. Hall was the target of a murder-for-hire scheme -- one person with ties to the case remains in federal custody on unrelated charges.

Just last month, a pipeline ruptured on the reservation, spilling about 1 million gallons of saltwater, a byproduct of oil and gas development. Cleanup continues but there were no reports of damage to the water supply.

Ten candidates filed to run for chairman by Thursday's deadline, The Bismarck Tribune reported. A September primary will narrow the top two candidates. The general election takes place in November.
