The U.S. Navy doesn't want to transfer surplus land to the Narragansett Tribe of Rhode Island The Bureau of Indian Affairs requested properties on Aquidneck Island on behalf of the tribe. But the Navy said the BIA did not want to accept them “as is” and wouldn't accept environmental and legal responsibility, The Newport Daily News reported.
