Opinion: Washington NFL team makes money off racial slur

James Rawlings, the chairman of the Connecticut Native American Inter Tribal Urban Council, calls on the Washington football team to eliminate its racist mascot:
Most recently in a attempt to right all the negativity, Washington Redskins owner Dan Synder has embarked on a traditional campaign of spin by supposedly traveling to 26 Native American reservations — less than 5 percent of all such reservations — and coming to the conclusion, his conclusion, that he can buy our support and the support of all non natives, of the un-American and racist logo, by promoting economic independence, by donating 3,000 sneakers and a backhoe to some of these tribes.

For a corporation, and that is what the Washington Redskins organization is, worth in excess of $1.7 billion, to sell to America and to Native Americans trinkets and beads — well less than the $24 for the entire Island of Manhattan — is shameful.

However, this is far from the real issue of the insult daily to Native Americans who are constantly reminded of what “redskins” has meant to their grandparents and elders and those who understand this history.

I think every ethnic group in America can think of slurs and bigoted comments they feel are intolerable and unacceptable and even though the Indian wars have their victors, the potato wars have their victors and the role of Italians and Germans have been discussed historically, we have found a way of not insulting other ethnic groups, at least not in this corporate-greed manner.
