Steve Emery, a member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, is the new Secretary of Tribal Relations in South Dakota.

Emery, who took over the job on October 27, is the second person to hold the Cabinet-level post. He currently serves as chief judge for the Crow Creek Sioux Tribe and is special judge for the Yankton Sioux Tribe and his own tribe.

Previously, Emery has served as an associate judge for the Oglala Sioux Tribe. He also worked for Dakota Plains Legal Services.

"I know the tribal governments and how they operate as well as knowing several of the chairman already," Emery told DRG News.

Emery said he plans to meet with all of the tribal leaders in the state. He will also host tribes during the annual state-tribal relations event
