South Dakota Tribal Relations Secretary to step down from job

Leroy “J.R.” LaPlante, South Dakota's Secretary of Tribal Relations, is stepping down from his post after three years on the job.

LaPlante, a member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe, was the first person to hold the Cabinet-level position. He is leaving to work for the U.S. Attorney's Office on Indian Country crime issues.

“I have loved my time as secretary, and will continue to build upon the relationships I have made as I embark on a new challenge in public service as an assistant United States attorney," LaPlante said in a press release.

LaPlante's resignation is effective August 1.
