Former chairwoman of Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe passes away

Judith L. Peterson, 1946-2015

Judith L. Petersen, a former president of the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe of South Dakota, died on Tuesday. She was 68.

Peterson served one term as chair from 1987 to 1990. During that time, she negotiated the tribe's first Class III gaming compact and later went to work at the Royal River Casino, where she spent 17 years in management.

Peterson grew up on the reservation in the 1940s. Her relatives from the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate played an important role in teaching her about tribal culture, according to Dakota Women's Work: Creativity, Culture, and Exile by Colette A. Hyman.

Peterson is being laid to rest in Flandreau tomorrow.
