The House Subcommittee on Indian, Insular, and Alaska Native Affairs will hold a legislative hearing on Wednesday.

Two bills are on the agenda. The first is H.R.1880, the Albuquerque Indian School Land Transfer Act.

Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-New Mexico) introduced the bill on April 16. It requires the Bureau of Indian Affairs to place 11.11 acres in trust for the 19 Pueblos of New Mexico.

The land is a part of the former Albuquerque Indian School and is located next to the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center. The tribes plan to use the site to expand economic development opportunities but it can't be used for gaming due to a prohibition in the bill.

The Senate version of the bill is S.986. It was approved by the Senate Indian Affairs Committee in May but it hasn't seen action on the floor yet.

The second item on the agenda for Wednesday is H.R. 2388, the Subsistence Access Management Act. Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska), the chairman of the subcommittee, introduced the bill on May 15 to reinstate rural designations for certain Alaska Native communities that were in place prior to a decision made by the Bush administration in May 2007.

The hearing takes place at 2pm in Room 1334 of the Longworth House Office Building. A witness list hasn't been posted online.
