The Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians broke ground on a tribal village in Hartford, Michigan, on Wednesday.

Pokégnek Édawat Hartford is located on 57 acres. The first phase of the project features eight homes that are expected to be complete in the spring of 2016.

“Pokégnek Édawat Hartford is the latest milestone in our mission to assist Elders, youth, and families with housing, community and self-sufficiency for a better quality of life,” Chairman John P. Warren said in a press release. “We have 39 families on the waiting list for homes in Hartford, so the demand is high. We look forward to completing the additional phases to serve our families in need.”

Eventually, the village will grow to include more homes, a community center and a park. Half of the housing units will be set aside for elders.

The tribe plans to submit a land-into-trust application to the Bureau of Indian Affairs for the site.
