Appeal planned in Grand Ronde Tribes disenrollment dispute

Disenrolled members of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde in Oregon plan to appeal.

The 86 former members descend from Chief Tumulth, who signed the 1855 Willamette Valley Treaty that promised a reservation for the tribe. But since he never joined a base roll -- he was executed by the U.S. Army barely a year later -- the tribe doesn't consider them to be eligible for membership.

"Being disenrolled is like being kicked in the teeth,” family spokesperson Mia Prickett told Oregon Public Broadcasting. “To have it stripped away like this is just gut-wrenching. It’s completely throwing away our family history, and what we sacrificed for all of our tribe.”

The chief judge of the tribe's court upheld the decision to disenroll the 86 people but Prickett and other descendants will be taking the case to the tribe's appellate court, OPB reported. That will be the last step in the process.
