LAME DEER, Mont. –– As fall approaches, Montana nights are getting chillier, but that has not deterred a group of grassroots tribal members, camping in front of the Northern Cheyenne tribal headquarters, now in fourth week of protest. The campers are preparing for winter, intent upon the long haul in an effort to either oust the current form of tribal government or to make elected officials more accountable to the tribal community.

The camp is becoming more home-like, indicating permanency, now including racks for drying meat from a buffalo recently donated by the tribal natural resources department. The camp is now furnished with tables, chairs, cupboards, indoor/ outdoor carpets, cooking utensils, food preparation area, coolers and food storage areas, welcoming the many supporters who visit on a daily basis, many bringing food, such as a carton of donuts from tribal elder Elsie Wick and a concoction of commodity eggs and sausage from another supporter.
