An Alaska Native leader has been named to the Arctic Research Commission.

Marie Greene served as president and CEO of NANA Regional Corporation, an Alaska Native corporation, up until her retirement in January. She will now be advising President Barack Obama and Congress on issues facing the Arctic.

"I am honored that these talented individuals have decided to serve our country," Obama said in a press release announcing Greene's positions and several others. "They bring their years of experience and expertise to this administration, and I look forward to working with them.”

Obama became the first sitting president to visit the Arctic this year during his historic three-day trip to Alaska. He met with Native leaders and visited Native communities that are dealing with the effects of climate change.

"When it comes to climate change, I believe there’s such a thing as being too late," Obama wrote on Medium after his visit. "And that moment is almost here."
