A man who operated the wastewater treatment plant for the Passamaquoddy Tribe at Indian Township pleaded guilty for violating Maine's environmental laws.

Dennis L. Brown, Jr., 32, gave up his wastewater operator’s certification after he admitted that he dumped raw sewage into the ground in a residential neighborhood. An estimated 96,000 gallons were released over the course of several days in November 2014, according to Attorney General Janet Mills.

"In this case, not only was there an impact on the environment, but Brown’s conduct created a serious risk to the health and safety of nearby residents," Mills said in a press release. She thanked the tribe for helping investigate the incident.

Brown was sentenced to 10 days in jail and was ordered to pay a $2,500 fine.
