The Moapa Band of Paiute Indians in Nevada continues to lead in solar energy.

The tribe just won approval for the Aiya Solar Project, the third of its kind on the reservation. The 100-megawatt facility, to be located on 900 acres, will generate enough electricity to power about 25,000 homes and will create 300 construction jobs

"Beyond these immediate benefits, these solar projects will provide long-term economic benefits that will allow the tribe to diversify, to grow and to achieve its goals while remaining true to our culture and heritage," Chairman Robert Tom said in a press release from the Interior Department. "The Aiya project is a key step in achieving our goals."

Interior Secretary Sally Jewell visited the reservation on Thursday to tour the previously-approved Moapa Southern Paiute Solar Project, a 250-megawatt facility that is near completion. A 200-megawatt plant, known as the Moapa Solar Energy Center, is also being developed.
