APRIL 20, 2000 The former principal chief of the Eastern Band of Cherokees has been sentenced to house arrest for pleading guilty to one count of tax evasion. Federal authorities agreed to a plea bargain with Jonathan "Ed" Taylor, 59, dropping charges of taking bribes and two other counts of tax evasion. Taylor could have been sentenced to five years in jail and fined $100,000 but a US District Court Judge handed down the sentence, which calls for six months of house arrest and three years of probation, after learning of Taylor's health problems.
