JUNE 16, 2000 The use of Native Americans as mascots was debated at the 17th Annual Native American Journalists Conference in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Eugene Tapahe, managing editor of The Navajo Times, Tom Arviso Jr, Times editor, Holly Annis, assistant director of the Native Media Center at the University of South Dakota, and Chief James Billie of the Seminole Tribe of Florida discussed the issue at a forum held Thursday night at the conference. Some opposed the use, such as Tapahe. Chief Billie said he has no objections to his tribe's names and symbols being used by Florida State University. The conference ends on June 17th. Get the Story:
