MARCH 6, 2001

Washington State Department of Ecology officials on Monday estimated about 500 gallons of oil were spilled into the Columbia River from an as-yet unidentified source.

The spill, covering about 30 miles in the Cowlitz County region, is threatening birds and fish. This is the height of the smelt run and an early run of threatened chinook salmon.

The Coast Guard is investigating where the oil came from.
