The Center for Biological Diversity and 10 environmental groups on Tuesday filed a petition to list the killer whale as endangered.

The petition says the southern resident orca population in the Pacific Northwest could go extinct within 200 years. The population, the petition says, has been on a decline and only about 82 exist in 2000.

A National Marine Fisheries Service spokesperson said the agency, part of the Department of Commerce, convened a conference on the falling population last fall.
