JUNE 18, 2001 Despite an effort to bring in more recruits, US Forest Service officials in New Mexico say they don't have enough fire fighters. Funding from Congress is supposed to add 3,500 new firefighters for the Forest Service and 1,700 for the Department of Interior. Secretary Gale Norton recently told Indianz.Com the Interior's effort to bring in Indian Country recruits has been successful, although not all can fulfill the requirements necessary to become a fire fighter.
