USDA moving on forest protection

JUNE 8, 2001

US Forest Service Chief Dale Bosworth on Thursday assumed control of the nation's forests in what the government characterized as a way to protect roadless areas and limit timber harvesting.

Environmentalists took his actions instead as opening up forests to development.

Bosworth initiated his action as several lawsuits challenging protection of forests are pending. The state of Idaho, the Kootenai Tribe, and industry groups have succeeded in preventing the government from implementing a set of rules limiting road building and timber sales on nearly 60 million acres of federal land.
