OCTOBER 12, 2000

The Senate on Wednesday renewed the Violence Against Women Act.

The act expired in September. The House already reauthorized the law last month.

"With thousands of women becoming the victims of beatings and other violent crimes every day, reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act is of paramount importance to all those involved in the fight to reduce crime in our communities," said Vice President Al Gore in response.

President Bill Clinton recently visited New Mexico to call on Congress to renew the act and to announce funding for tribal domestic violence programs. A survey released in July showed that Native American women reported the highest rates of rape, physical assault, and stalking than any other group.

On Wednesday, Clinton said he looked forward to signing the bill.
