Olympics highlighted indigenous

OCTOBER 2, 2000

Without a doubt, the now complete 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, put a positive spotlight on the country's indigenous population.

Whether or not the spotlight will remain and have positive change on the future relationship between the government and the estimated 386,000 is another question. Problems of poverty, racism, drug abuse, health, and crime continue to affect aboriginal communities.

Attempts at reconciliation between the country and aboriginals is another issue. So far, the government has refused to apologize for the past practice of stealing aboriginal children and Prime Minister John Howard said dealing with aboriginals on a nation-nation status or as a sovereign people is out of the question.
